LIVERPOOL CREAMWARE PITCHER OF THE SHIP “BELLONA”. Late 18th early 19th century. This gilt and transfer-decorated pitcher depicting the Privateer Bellona whose inaugural voyage was Oct. 10, 1781. The opposing side a pastoral landscape within a foliate border, a displayed eagle with banner “E Pluribus Unum”, shield, cluster of arrows and olive branch beneath the spout. SIZE: 8-3/4″ h PROVENANCE: Accompanying this example is a copy of an announcement printed in the New Hampshire Gazette Sept. 27, 1781. It reads as follows: “The truly excellent constructed new ship “Bellona”, (Thomas Manning, Commander), mounting 18 double-fortified 6 pounders and every other way completely fitted for a Privateer; is now ready to engage her compliments of men for a Three Months Cruize against the enemies of the United States of America, will sail by the 10th of October next. All gentlemen, Seamen, and others, that are desirous of being in Fortune’s Way, may receive great Encouragement by repairing immediately on Board said Ship, now lying at Bell’s Wharf, or at her rendezvous”.
