IMPORTANT EARLY GOLD WASH AND NIELLO WORK RUSSIAN ENGRAVED CIGAR CASE. The oval cylinder case having a 1/3 removable top. The top sides decorated with two oval scenes in niello work. The top having a script monogram. The base having two vertical oval panels with niello work with building facade with columns and house in background. Impress hallmarked “84” (875/1000). There is another mark which is illegible. A note accompanying this lot in hand script pen states “Cigar case carried by Com Stephen Decatur, Given him by a friend-presented to Capt. Alex Slidell MacKenzie by Com Decaturs’ widow-Presented to Midman (midshipman) Stephen Decatur Jr. in 1905 by Capt. Morris R.S. MacKenzie US Navy to whom it had been given by his father A S MacKenzie Property of Stephen Decatur Jr. S. D.” WEIGHT: 6 tr oz. SIZE: 4-3/4″ h x 1-1/2″ w. CONDITION: The bottom with slight loss to gilding, the top having a 1/2″ puncture at top side and roughness around bottom edge. Otherwise very good. 9-97933 (3,000-5,000)
