STORER FAMILY SILVER PORRINGER. 1st half of 18th century, Boston. Made by Samuel Edwards of Boston (1705-1762) and so hallmarked beneath the handle and in the center of the bowl. The molded bowl with everted rim and concave base. the underside of the base marked “8.. 5.. 6”. Above each numeral in script is the following “oz dwt. g”. One would suppose this represents units of measurement, i.e. eight ounces, five dram weights and six grams. Applied with a scrolled handle engraved in the center with the initials “J * E” beneath an “S” for John & Elizabeth Storer. A page within the handwritten notebook of personal property is #2 “Porringer marked SI & E for John & Elizabeth Storer-Made by Samuel Edwards of Boston 1805-1762 A Connection of the Storers”. WEIGHT: 8 tr oz. SIZE: 2-1/4″ h, overall 8-1/4″ l, 5-1/2″ diameter PROVENANCE: By descent through the Stephen Decatur family. CONDITION: Overall very good with shallow denting and surface scratching throughout commensurate with age and usage. 9-97924 (1,500-2,500)
