DECATUR FAMILY SILVER BAPTISMAL FOOTED BOWL. Circa 1818, made by John W. Forbes (1808-1838), New York. The deep footed bowl with everted rim on a stepped circular footed plinth with the base rim with the hallmark of “I W Forbes” (J. W. Forbes). The side of the bowl monogrammed “M B” and the date “1819”. Opposite the engraving: “A bequest / 1819 / Mary Ten Eyck Brown / Daughter of Samuel Ten Eyck / and / widow of Thomas Brown / to her grand niece / Maria Susannah Decatur / daughter of John P. Decatur”. WEIGHT: 12 tr. oz. SIZE: 4-3/4″ h x 6-1/4″ d PROVENANCE: By descent through the Stephen Decatur family. A page within the handwritten notebook of personal property is #5 “Baptismal Bowl 1819 maker I.W. Forbes for John W. Forbes. All my great grandfather Decatur’s generation were baptized with this bowl.” CONDITION: Very good overall with expected shallow dents and scratches from normal usage. 9-97923 (1,000-2,000)
