TWO PERSONAL JEWELRY ITEMS OF COMMODORE STEPHEN DECATUR. This lot consists of two items. Both have very old handwritten tags identifying each as having belonged to Commodore Stephen Decatur. 1) Stick pin set with what appears to be a pear shaped cabochon ruby approximately 5mm x 7mm surrounded by twenty-four rose cut diamonds all set in 14kt gold (tested). 2) Seal carved from agate set with either 9kt or 10kt gold (tested bale). The engraving on the seal is hand done and is engraved with the initials “AG”. According to family history “AG” stands for Captain Sir Alexander Gordon, commanding the British frigate Narcissus, aboard which ship the Commodore was brought back from the U.S. from Bermuda after his capture in the frigate “President”. The Commodore and Captain Gordon became great friends and exchanged seals. CONDITION: The seal appears to be excellent. The stick pin has a microscopic hole drilled near the apex, perhaps it at one time was part of a pendant. Both items, according to family notes, were at one time were also owned by William Decatur Parsons. 9-97936-2 (1,000-1,500)
