18TH CENTURY TRUNK DATED 1773 AND INSCRIBED, “CAPTAIN LEAR FOR SHIP PANTHER”. This wooden dome trunk still retaining its original leather covering and ornamented with brass tacks. The interior of the trunk lined in paper, the side inscribed in period ink, “CAPTIAN LEAR FOR SHIP PANTHER”. The interior of the lid fitted with the original paper depicting various playing card symbols and having the label from the maker James Bryant Trunk Maker at the Trunk and B—– the Corner of Paul’s facing Cheapside, London. Also dated beneath what appears to be July 6th, 1773. Captain Tobias Lear (referred to as the fourth Tobias) was born August 1st, 1737 and died November 6th, 1781. He was, for several years during the American Revolution, superintendent of the Continental Yard at Langdon’s (now Badgers) Island in Piscataquis River opposite Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was the builder of the famous ship captained by John Paul Jones known as the “Ranger”. He was married to Mary Stilson and they had two children; Mary Lear and Colonel Tobias Lear (referred to as the fifth Tobias) who later became Washington’s secretary and his personal best friend.
