EARLY ORNATE SILVER-MOUNTED FRENCH CONVERSION HALF STOCK FOWLER. SN None. Cal. About 16 bore. Originally a flintlock now converted to a percussion. Fine high grade fowler with 32-1/2″ steel bbl that has a multi-faceted transition. It has a small silver front bead with scoop shaped rear sight. Mounted in very highly figured French walnut half stock with raised teardrop side panels and raised foliate carving on forestock and back of the top tang. It has beautiful relief repoussed silver furniture with elaborate game scene trigger bow. The trigger guard and buttplate are hallmarked. The sideplate and other silver furniture are decorated with elaborate foliate arabesque and floral patterns with a trophy of arms on sideplate. Buttplate is 1-pc silver with a hunting horn, hare and hunting bag on the tang. Leading edge of comb on buttstock also has raised carving with a raised fleur-de-lis. Bottom of bbl has an applied iron rib with two fluted silver guides containing what appears to be the original ramrod. Lockplate is 5-1/4″ long, rounded and slightly curved with maker’s name nearly worn away and indecipherable with maker’s city of “NANTES” visible on bottom edge. Hammer screw is broken and hammer is missing. Conversion is in the Belgian style with a tumbler & nipple replacing the orig flintlock, pan & frizzen. CONDITION: Good to very good. Overall shows heavy wear and use but could be easily restored to a functioning firearm. One trigger guard screw is broken and there are a couple of small cracks below lockplate and a few chips missing around lockplate. Silver furniture appears to be intact showing moderate wear with some sprung langettes on buttplate. Bbl is a very dark brown attic patina with a couple of dents at the muzzle 9-97974 (1,000-2,000)
