EPAULETS AND BUTTON OF COLONEL JOHN PINE DECATUR. John was brother of the illustrious Commodore Stephen Decatur and the only artillery officer we know of in this family so it is reasonably certain these epaulets were his and used during his involvements in the War of 1812. EPAULETS: Late 18th century-early 19th century, bullion fringe and red cloth,similar to those used in American Revolution and Obsolete not long after the War of 1812. Cloth epaulets of this era are scarce. Also included in this lot is a rare War of 1812 Artillery button. This button was made and marked by H. Wishant of New York. This button in fine condition still retaining fine plating is in small box with name of Colonel John Pine Decatur. Albert in his book notes this pattern as AY48 and dates it 1808-1811, this is a scarce button and belonging to brother of one of America’s most famous Naval heroes and is a wonderful relic CONDITION: Overall very good. 9-97969-3 (800-1,200)
