SCARCE SET OF FLAG OFFICER’S STRAPS AND CAPTAINS CAP DEVICE OF CIVIL WAR ERA. These have descended through the Stephen Decatur Family, however we are not sure as to who these insignia may have belonged to. This lot consists of insignia that were regulations of 1852 U.S. Navy. They would have been worn until sometime in 1862 when changes were made during the Civil War. Regulation U.S. Navy rank insignia of this era are quite rare and rarely offered. The cap device with eagle clutching anchor and coral reef denotes Captain and the straps with the stars on either side of the eagle denote temporary rank of flag officer for a captain. SIZE: The straps are approximately 4”l. CONDITION: The shoulder straps appear to be in generally good condition with teeny losses or “mothing” on the edge of the felt outside the gold bullion. The hat insignia has scattered “mothing” problems, the most significant of which is the upper right side. 9-97969-2 (500-1,000)
