FINE PAIR OF ENGLISH HEPPLEWHITE CARVED MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIRS. Second half of the 18th century. The rectangular overupholstered back with serpentine crestrail joined to padded arms ending in foliate carved and scrolled armrests on incurved foliate carved supports centering a trapezoidal overupholstered seat with serpentine frontal seat rail raised on frontal foliate carved and molded cabriole legs terminating in scrolled toes. The rear legs backswept with similar feet. SIZE: 40″ h of back, 16″ h of seat, 27-3/4″ w of seat. PROVENANCE: Woolworth Collection (F.W. Woolworth Dept. Store). Stair & Company, New York, N.Y. CONDITION: Structurally very good with original surfaces. Carving is crisp and of high quality. Now upholstered in a pale green velvet. 9-21313 (5,000-10,000)
