OUTSTANDING PRE-CIVIL WAR NAVAL DRESS UNIFORM OF CAPTAIN GEORGE WASHINGTON STORER. This is a very fine Naval uniform, typical of the 1840s/50s period and has seen little use. The inner right sleeve inscribed in ink is a tab which reads, “CAPT. G. W. STORER”. Storer’s uncle was Colonel Tobias Lear, Aide de camp to General George Washington. Storer was a life-long Naval officer who obtained the rank of Rear Admiral in 1862. He became Captain February 9th, 1837 and continued to be captain until approximately 1846. The regulation Navy buttons made in the late 1840s and 1850s have the back mark of “W. H. SMITH, NEW YORK” as a raised mark in a depressed channel. The buttons exhibit most of their original gilt. The accompanying vest is made of white linen and is also in very good condition and has a full complement of vest-sized Navy buttons attached with a period back mark that appears to be “F. I. F. & CO., LONDON”. Please Note: There are other lots in this auction which consist of documents and record books of Storer’s time on board various ships and also during his period of governorship of the Naval Asylum. CONDITION: This coat exhibits great color to the body and bullion decoration to cuffs and collars are also very good. The silk sleeve linings and padded chest interior is also very good. 9-97969-1 (2,500-3,500)
