FIVE VARIOUS FLAGS & PENNANTS DESCENDING THROUGH THE DECATUR LYRE STORER FAMILY TOGETHER WITH A CHRISTENING BOTTLE FOR THE DESTROYER U.S.S. DECATUR. 1) Included is a 48-star US Naval Ensign sign circa WWI with wool bunting. Flag incorporates a rope hoist and the hoist is stenciled “U.S.N.” sign. SIZE: 59” X 112”. CONDITION: Generally in very good condition. 2) 13-star maritime flag. This variant naval flag with fluted anchor surrounded by 13 stars in a circle first surfaced around WWI and is likely where this flag dates. It is a nice small displayable size. SIZE: 31” x 59”. CONDITION: Retains much of its color but is stained, soiled and has mothing losses and/or repairs. 3) 13-star Ensign dating to WWI. This is made for a small boat and flag is marked on the hoist “U.S. Navy Yard NY/Boat April 191-“. This is likely WWI and obviously had seen plenty of action and use as it is heavily soiled and darkened from what is typically determined to be smoke and gun powder residue or coal smoke. SIZE: 29” x 41”. CONDITION: It has extensive additions to the flag and shows fraying and losses. 4) Two service flags; one WWI or WWII. They are machine sewn with metal grommets. This star flag was adopted around 1918 and has been used ever since. The Blue Star organizations have chapters nationwide. Flags are only to be flown in wartime. The two blue stars in each flag denote to family members serving in the military if a family member was killed in action or died in service, a gold star would be superimposed over one of the blue ones. SIZE: Each measure around 2’ x 3’. One shows scattered mothing throughout and some staining. The other is generally in excellent condition. Cased Christening bottle decorated with red, white and blue ribbons. The fourth U.S.S. Decatur (DD-936)was a Forrest Sherman Class destroyer of the United States Navy. Names for Commodore Stephen Decatur, U.S.N. (1779-1820). The USS Decatur laid down by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation at Quincy, Massachusetts on 13 September 1954, launched on 15 December 1955 by Mrs. W.A. Pierce and Mrs. D J Armsden, descendants of Commodore Decatur and commissioned on 7 December 1956, CDR John J. Skahill Commanding. This vessel saw service in Viet Nam, the Persian Gulf and was retired in 2004.
