LOT OF FOUR LATE 19th CENTURY SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR ERA FLAGS ALONG WITH THREE BUNTING FLAGS. Descending through the Decatur family and possibly used by Admiral Dewey. Admiral Dewey was related to the Decatur-Lyre-Goodwin family by marriage. His illustrious naval career began during the Civil War and commenced through the Spanish-American War up until just prior to WWI. He was the only person in history in the United States to attain the rank of Admiral of the navy; the most senior rank in the United States navy and is referred to as the “hero of Manila”. The flags include 1) Spanish-American era 45-star flag having wool bunting with alternating rows of eight and seven stars. The canvas hoist is stenciled with the original size of the flag 6’ x 10’ and also the ink inscribed name “Charles H. Fish”. This was the official flag in the Spanish-American war and commemorated the state of Utah entering the Union in 1896. The flag was official and in use until 1908. It is not known how Charles H. Fish related to the family or what this designation implies. SIZE: 68” x 108”. CONDITION: Flag has definitely seen use. The colors are faded; the blues and reds are no longer vibrant, but are muted. There are some losses, a couple of which are approx. 5” x 5”. 2) Spanish-American War era 45-star flag. This was the official flag from 1896 to 1908. SIZE: 52” x 88”. CONDITION: Reasonable good colors, some staining and soiling throughout, but generally good. 3) Three bunting flags include a naval designating flag. Naval regulations as to such flags have changed so often we are guessing that these are captain or commander’s flags that were flown to show that an officer of that rank was aboard. Admiral flags today show white stars on a blue background but in earlier times white stars could’ve been used on red canton such as one of these. SIZE: 11-1/2” x 20”, 22” x 35” and the largest 70” x 107”. They date around turn of the century; late 1800s/very early 1900s. CONDITION: The colors are strong, but there is scattered staining on all of them. Also scattered moth damage throughout and some losses. The three are generally good. 4) Two large naval used pennants. They appear to be 19th Century, one measures 48” x 17” and is a white and blue triangular pennant, hand sewn and could date as early as the Civil War. It is not a standard signal we are familiar with. The second flag measuring 107” x 74” is a swallow tail pennant consisting of 13 alternating red and white stripes. It is marked “Manufactured by US Bunting Co. Lowell, Mass and Broad Pennant #5”. Also inked on the hoist of the flag is the name “ARP Decatur”. US Bunting mark is consistent with other marked flags in the 1870 era and after. US Bunting started business in 1866 and had many US Naval contracts for flags. These two flags have good color, but have scattered overall staining and scattered mothing damage. A wonderful selection of flags from one of the country’s most famous and distinguished naval family. SIZE: As noted above CONDITION: As noted above. 9-97959, 9-97959-5; 9-97959-7; 9-97959-9; 9-97959-13; 9-97959-14; 9-97959-15 (1,500-2,500)
