LARGE 19th CENTURY 13 STAR NAVAL FLAG. The white stars are hand sewn onto the blue canton with canvas hoist having brass grommets with two alternating red and white stripes. The name “ARP DECATUR” is written in period ink on the hoist. Arp Decatur is for Anna Rowell Philbrick Decatur, this flag was her husband’s who was a career naval officer holding the rank of Lieutenant in 1841, Commander in 1861, in 1867 he attained the rank of captain and in 1869 the rank of Commodore. Commodore Decatur was the son of John Pine Decatur and nephew of his famous namesake. SIZE: 53-1/2” on the hoist. 97” on the fly. CONDITION: Flag has seen plenty of use and has scattered “mothing” throughout, stains and some discoloration.
