NICE CIVIL WAR 34-STAR FLAG (1861-1863). This is a very displayable and appealing size and the likelihood is that it was formerly owned by Stephen Decatur who was also a career naval officer with rank of Commander as of 1861, Captain in 1867 and Commodore in 1869. Commodore Decatur was the son of John Pine Decatur and nephew of his famous namesake. The 34-star flag was introduced when Kansas became the 34th state. The flag has a wool bunting, is all hand sewn with the exception of machine-sewn carpal(?) stars, the canvas hoist exhibits hand-sewn grommets. SIZE: 24” hoist, 52” fly. CONDITION: Flag exhibits fine color though it shows use and has scattered staining, soiling, “mothing” as well as a few separations which can be seen in the illustration. A nice early Civil War flag, having descended through a famous U.S. Naval family. 9-97950 (1,000-2,000)
