PAIR OF RARE CIVIL WAR ERA COMMANDER’S U.S.N. SHOULDER STRAPS, NAVAL APPOINTMENT, 34-STAR CIVIL WAR FLAG AND IMAGES OF COMMANDER STEPHEN DECATUR. This lot consists of a very rare pair of Commander’s U.S.N. shoulder straps which are almost never offered. There were a few officers of this rank at the beginning of the Civil War. These shoulder straps are being offered with three images of Commander Stephen Decatur, the original owner of these shoulder straps. One image is an albumen photo the back in period script, “COM. DECATUR RED COTTAGE”. The image also bearing the photographer’s scant, “J.L. McCormick, Boston”. The remaining two images are an exact copies of the first but are printed on white porcelain plaques and one is housed in a wooden frame. Commander Stephen Decatur was the son of John Pine Decatur and nephew of his famous namesake, Commander Stephen Decatur. He was born in 1814 and lived until 1876. He was commander in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War and in 1868, attained the rank of Commodore. The images depict Decatur wearing an exact pair (perhaps the same) pair of boards being offered here. Also included is an original Naval appointment of Lt. Stephen Decatur, dated march 2, 1841 and assigning him to the Sloop “Warren”. Civil War American flag with 34 stars. (1861-1863) This wool bunting flag is machine sewn with cotton stars and hand sewn grommets in canvas hoist. This flag measures 41″ on hoist and 87″ on fly. This is a Decatur family flag as indicated by the cloth tag and very likely that Stephen Decatur who was a career Naval Officer with the rank of Commander as of 1861, he was Captain in 1867 and Commodore in 1869. Commodore Decatur was the son of John Pine Decatur and nephew of his famous namesake. He married Anne Rowell Pin and her initials appear on one or more other flags with the same cloth tag. SIZE: Image size of the albumen print Approx. 6”h x 4”w; the shoulder straps are Approx. 4”h x 1-1/2” w. Flag: 41-1/2″ x 90″. CONDITION: Photos generally good, some soiling.
