CIVIL WAR 34-STAR AMERICAN FLAG FROM THE STORER-DECATUR FAMILY. (1861-1863). This flag is likely either George Washington Storer’s flag or Commander Stephen Decatur’s. Admiral Storer was a career U.S. Naval officer who died late in the Civil War. Stephen Decatur was also a career naval officer with rank of Commander as of 1861, Captain in 1867 and Commodore in 1869. Commodore Decatur was the son of John Pine Decatur and nephew of his famous namesake. This flag is similar to the other flag referenced and likely was used by him. This is a wool bunting flag with double appliqué cotton stars, machine-sewn with canvas hoist and hand-sewn grommets. SIZE: 45” on the hoist and 74” on the fly. CONDITION: Flag has good color but shows use. In general, is in good condition. It does have staining, scattered “mothing” and a few small loses along the border. 9-97948 (1,000-2,000)
