NEWBURYPORT CHIPPENDALE BIRCH TALL CASE CLOCK, DIAL SIGNED DAVID WOOD. Second half 18th century, Massachusetts. The bonnet with molded swan’s neck pediment with pinwheel rosettes alternating with brass ball and spire finials fitted with a molded arched door flanked by freestanding colonnettes with brass capitals and bases joined to the rectangular throat fitted with a conforming door with arched top joined to a cove molded box base raised on bracket feet. The painted iron dial with Roman numeral and Arabic chapter ring centering a sweep seconds subsidiary dial above calendar, time and strike apertures above the painted name “DAVID WOOD/Newbury Port” all within polychrome painted spandrels of floral sprays. The arch paint decorated with an exotic bird amidst flowering branches within a pointilated blue wreath. The associated 8 day brass movement striking on bell with an “Osborne’s” iron back plate. Offered with pendulum, finials, winder, two weights and door key. SIZE: 84-1/2″ h x 14″ w of throat x 9-1/2″ d. CONDITION: Case with mahoganized finish, scrubbed. Glass panel in door cracked. Dial probably cleaned with early repaint. Craquelure throughout. Overall good. Movement possibly English. 9-25538 (5,000-8,000)
