35-STAR CIVIL WAR FLAG FROM THE STORER-DECATUR FAMILY. 35-star flags were official July 4th, 1863 when West Virginia became the 35th state of the Union. This wool binding flag has machine-sewn stars but a hand-sewn hoist with hand-sewn grommets. A period paper tag, affixed to the blue field reads in period ink script, “MABEL STORER”. Also a small cloth tag with ink inscription “DECATUR” also in period script is attached to the hoist. This is likely a flag originally owned by George Washington Storer who was a career Naval officer and the father of Mabel Storer. Mabel Storer married Stephen Decatur after the Civil War and consequently, this flag obviously passed from Admiral Storer to his daughter and son-in-law and thus the reason for these period tags. SIZE: 46”w x 75”l. CONDITION: Very attractive flag with good colors and a wonderful period paper identification tag. The flag itself with scattered “mothing” or tears as well as losses to the edge. Generally in good condition and with documentation from a noted U.S. Naval officer. 9-97959-6 (1,000-3,000)
