FINE SET OF EIGHT HEPPLEWHITE MAHOGANY SHIELD BACK ARMCHAIRS. 19th century, New York. Believed to be benchmade Centennial chairs, each with molded arched top of crestrail continuing to serpentine sides then to molded stiles, centering curved molded splats each acanthus carved at the base within the shield. Beneath the arched crestrail is a carved floral spray. The molded arms with incised carving on incurved supports centering a bowed seat frame with serpentine front rail raised on square molded tapering legs, concave at the front and outer edge, blocked at the ankle then tapering to the foot. The rear legs slightly backswept. Note: for an example with similar elements see American Furniture, The Federal Period by Charles F. Montgomery, figure 52, page 107. SIZE: 37-3/4″ h of back, 18″ h of seat x 22″ w overall. CONDITION: Three chairs with old professional repairs to backs, otherwise generally good. Medium to dark brown color.
