LARGE ARCHIVE OF LETTERS AND DOCUMENTS FOR COMMANDER GEORGE WASHINGTON STORER. Storer, the nephew of Tobias Lear was born May 4, 1789 and died January 8, 1864. He was a career Naval officer entering in 1809 as a mid shipman, commissioned as a lieutenant in 1813, served on the ship “Independence” on the Mediterranean station in 1815-1816, Commanded the schooner “Lynx” on New England coast in the Gulf of Mexico in 1817, Cruised on frigate “Congress” and “Jabar” in the West Indies in 1818 & 1819, served on the frigate “Constitution” in the Mediterranean in 1820-1824. He was commission Master Commandant April 1828, Captain in 1837 and commanded the received ship “Constellation” at Boston in 1839. The frigate “Potoma” of Brazil station in 1840-1842 and in the Navy Yard in Portsmouth in 1843-1846. He was Commander in Chief of the Brazil squadron in 1847-1850, and was President of the Board of Inquiry and in 1855-1857 he was Governor of the Naval Asylum in Philadelphia. This lot includes a few hundred letters and documents that span over the period of his career relating to all matters of his business and Naval responsibilities. Also included is a hand written ledger book of the Biography of Beneficiaries of the United States Naval Asylum in Philadelphia in which there are approximately 90 pages of information relating to various beneficiaries citing their name, age, their service, etc. The book dates to around the mid 19th Century as this is when he was in charge of the Asylum. A number of the individuals outlined in the book joined the Naval service in the 18th Century and some of the accounts are rather lengthy and interesting concerning their service records. Also included are two-leather bound ledgers relating to various court-martials. Many of the inclusions are dated in the 1840’s and covers a number of cases. Another similar volume dated in the late 1840’s titled “Copy” consists of approximately 190 pages also covering various court-martials. In addition, is an order book with dates starting in 1839 consisting of approximately 30 pages of copies of orders written on board the U.S.S. Columbus, the U.S. Frigate Potomac and Constellation. Together with a small hand written booklet titled “Convoy Signal Book U.S. Ship Boston 1830”. The book begins with a number of color illustrations depicting various signal flags and what they indicate and consists of approximately 6 pages of hand written and watercolor drawings. An account book dated 1854 for groceries, a text titled “Boat Armorment of the US Navy” by J.A. Dalgrin, 1856. Another book titled “Instructions” in relation to the preparation of vessels that go out for battle, dated 1852. Book titled “Instructions to Naval Store Keepers and Pursers” dated 1855. Hand written journal from 1848-1850 titled “Record Book of the US Frigate Brandywine Flagship of Commander George W. Storer, Brazil Station”. Many of the pages titled Rio Di Janeiro, the journal with 50+ entry pages of text. Also a hand written booklet titled “Ordinance Book U.S. Frigate “Potomac”” includes gun exercises, extract from the Captain M.Z. Perry’s gun report, charges of powder for gun and is titled in the beginning “Navy Commissioners Office 30 May 1840”. Apparently a request from Captain Kerny asking for a manual to be prepared regarding the use of the 8” guns. This paper covered ledger covers in detail how they should be handled, charged, fired, etc. Also an “Orders of Rules and Regulation” paper ledger of the U.S. S. Brandywine dated 1847. It being half full consisting of approximately 50+ pages. Finally, another hand written “General Orders and Internal Regulations of the U.S.S. Boston”, George Washington Storer, Esq. Commander. No date but appears to possibly be from the 1840’s. This is a large, very diversified and very interesting archive of nautical information spanning one famous Naval officers entire career.
