LARGE LOT OF LETTERS AND RECORD BOOKS OF ICHABOD GOODWIN. Ichabod Goodwin was born in South Berwick, Maine October 10, 1796, died July 4, 1882. He was a successful merchant in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and became master and part owner of several ships. He married Sara Parker Rice and later became Governor of New Hampshire. In May of 1861 when the Civil War broke out Goodwin responded to the first call of soldiers by borrowing funds against his own name to equip two regiments. Lot includes an 18th Century domed leather bound trunk filled with letters and documents together with numerous other letters and documents. Generally all relating to business matters or the various ships in which he had part owners. Many bills and receipts, a large number of stamped and print envelopes, approximately 20 small account books. In all there are approximately well over 100 letters, most with envelopes; an equally large number of receipts and records relating to business. The majority of these are from the early 19th Century, 1820’s to 1850’s. CONDITION: Varies considerably but generally good. 9-97928, 9-97944 (500-1,000)
