LG. MISCELLANEOUS GROUP OF 19TH C. BUSINESS DOCUMENTS, MOST ICHABOD GOODWIN. A large miscellaneous group of 19th century business documents and canceled checks, mostly of Ichabod Goodwin, Governor of New Hampshire, some nautical, some railroad in nature with occasional interesting post marks. Among the interesting items different in nature is a letter of Captain Pearson of the Portsmouth Navy Yard April 26, 1861 to Governor Goodwin regarding securing the safety of Portsmouth Harbor during the Civil War. Also an ALS of Commodore William H. Barron (1847 to Governor Goodwin). Among the business papers is a lengthy and detailed accounting of the purchase of English chinaware. Also an ALS of G. B. Bartlett, Concord Massachusetts Sept. 13, 1867 enclosing a “climbing fern” discovered by Thoreau and found only in two places in America (not present). Finally two telegrams to Governor Goodwin concerning the assassination of Lincoln April 14, 1865 “at 2:30 A.M. The case was considered absolutely hopeless…The murder is supposed to been committed by J. Wilkes Booth, actor who escaped.” Another telegram of April 15 to Governor Goodwin stating that “Lincoln died at 7:22 this a.m.”. This material deserves a careful reading.
