N. NISSON, DANISH CONSUL AT TRIPOLI TO TOBIAS LEAR ALS, JULY 10, 1804. 2-1/2 pp. sm. fo. In this letter, Nisson explains to Tobias Lear that it would be necessary for him to “postpone” his acceptance of President Jefferson’s gift of a gold snuff box. Nisson explained that in accepting the gift, his position of neutrality in the eyes of the Bashaw would be compromised. “The Bashaw would see in me an open enemy” and make it impossible for him to be of help to Captain Bainbridge and his fellow prisoners. A highly interesting letter. CONDITION: Fine. 9-98647 (500-750)
