TOBIAS LEAR, ACCOUNT BOOKS, 1803-1805. Lot of five pieces. 40 pp., 8vo. “Of sundries purchased…and shipped on board the U.S. Brig Syren (?), Charles Stewart, Commander…Nov 22, 1803”. Included are a number of gold snuff boxes and gold repeating watches which were subsequently given to various notables including the Bey of Tripoli, the Bey of Tunis, the Bashaw of Tripoli, the Prime Minister of Algiers, the Moorish Secretary of the Bey of Tunis, the Christian Secretary of the Bey of Tunis and others. This account book also deals with yards of cloth material, damask and gold brocade “distributed at Tripoli”; two chests of tea, also articles sent by Richard O’Brien to Joseph L. Cathcart and by him to Tobias Lear. These include a necklace of a hundred pearls valued at twelve hundred dollars and a diamond ring solitaire valued at eight hundred dollars. This account book is accompanied by two invoice books detailing the cost of jewelry and cloth, the first totaling $16,302 and the second $15,903.
