TOBIAS LEAR ALS 1-1/2 PAGE 4TO MT. VERNON JANUARY 1ST, 1800. In this letter to President John Adams, Lear thanks Adams and his wife for their condolences for the loss. The President, with Congress, had made a request to move Washington’s body and have it deposited in a tomb there in Washington. “After a severe struggle, Mrs. Washington has yielded to the request made by Congress, as you will find from her letter.”. He goes on to state that having lived with Washington for some forty years, the only thing she has to look forward to is that her remains be deposited in the same tomb as his. Lear states “consent to an act which possibly, might deprive her”. He goes on to say “I have ventured to give her the firmest assurance of my belief that the removal of the General’s Body would not deprive her of this consolation, which is so dear to a mind affected like her’s.”. He makes it very clear to Adams that while she consents to have Washington’s body moved to the tomb, it is with the understanding that with her demise she can be interred with Washington. Of course the plan was not carried out and Washington was interred at Mt. Vernon. CONDITION: Very good. 9-97910 (1,000-2,000)
