IMPORTANT SIX PAGE LETTER SIGNED BY COMPOSER RICHARD WAGNER FEBRUARY 5, 1855. The letter on a folded double-sided sheet containing six pages of text. A stamp to upper left “Straf-anstalt Zu Waldheim”. The letter, in German, dated Zurich, 5 Feb 1855. It concerns a few topics, one the visit of his wife; the performance of Tannhauser across Germany and the success of his Lohengrin and Flying Dutchman though he states the performances are more or less bad. He mentions that the London Philharmonical Society invites Wagner for a series of concerts during the season and Wagner accepts. They were to be between March 12 and June 25. At the beginning of July he intends to be back at Seelisberg on the Vierwaldstatter. He has finished the composition of the Walkure and at the special request of Liszt he sends him the original of Rheingold for inspection. He gives an account of Schopenhauer’s life and his philosophy. Note: There are correspondences with several autograph dealers in the 1970s regarding the possible sale of this document. In a response from Charles Hamilton is the following “Over the years I have handled dozens of Wagner letters, but yours is the finest I have ever seen!” With the letter there was provided a copy in German as well as two translations into English. On one of the copies it was noted that the letter had been published in the book “Letters by Richard Wagner” by W. Altmann. SIZE: 8-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ CONDITION: Very good.
