THOMAS JEFFERSON, ALS. 1 full page, 4to, with address leaf franked by Jefferson to Tobias Lear, June 19, 1813, Monticello. With fascinating content on several subjects. First recounting that the Dey of Algiers and stating that probably little can be accomplished with him until “We have peace with England…but then I would, at any expense, hunt him from the ocean. A Navy equal to that object we should ever keep.” “I sincerely congratulate you on the profession of a son …As you intend him for the bar, I know no state in the Union now superior to Maryland in that science. In the hours of relaxation from this laborious study, (which ought to be at least half the hours of study)…information with the auxiliary sciences of history, ethics, politics, and to cultivate the imagination, and chasten style & taste by Poetry, and it’s kindred arts of Oratory & Rhetoric. I presume he has at College laid a decent foundation of Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, & perhaps of Nat.l history.” An extraordinary letter in which Jefferson speaks of the necessity of a navy, the State of Maryland being the best place for Lear’s son to stand for the bar, and describes in detail his concept of a good education.
