GEORGE WASHINGTON, ALS, TO HIS NEPHEW GEORGE AUGUSTINE WASHINGTON. 4 full, closely written pages, 4to Mt. Vernon, Oct 25, 1786 to his nephew George Austine Washington. An absolutely extraordinary letter in which Washington speaks of family issues and stated that his nephew can expect to inherit a significant parcel of land and suggests he “seat the negroes which Colo. Bassett has promised you, upon that part of the tract, on which Samuel Johnson formerly lived”. intending them to prepare and build upon it for his nephew’s future residence. Also Washington writes “if Mrs. Washington should survive me there is a moral certainty of my dying without issue, and should I be the longest liver, the matter in my opinion is almost as certain; for whilst I retain the reasoning faculties I shall never marry a girl; and it is not probable that I should have children by a woman of an age suitable to my own, should I be disposed to enter into a second marriage.” NOTE: This probably came into the possession of Tobias Lear through his marriage to the widow of George Augustine Washington, Frances Bassett Washington. CONDITION: Very good. 9-97919 (40,000-60,000)
