HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM HENRY KNOX TO THE GOVERNOR OF NORTH CAROLINA, JANUARY 18, 1794. Letter as follows: “War Department January 18, 1794 Sir, I had the honor of writing to your Excellency on the 13th instant and of transmitting duplicates of the same. His Catholic Majesty’s commissioners being desirous that every obstacle may be removed to their agents receiving the money taken by the L’Amee Margueritte, an illicit French privateer, from the Spanish brig St. Joseph, and it appearing indisputable from the evidence received that the money in possession of the Marshall of North Carolina was taken out of the said brig, your Excellency will therefore please to cause it to be delivered to the agent who has been appointed by the Spanish Commissioners for that purpose. I had the honor to be with great respect your Excellency’s obedient servant, H. Knox, Secy of War”. Marked on fold “NO.2 Duplicate/H.Knox/18 January 1794/Recd 6 February 1794″. At this time Henry Knox was Secretary of War under George Washington and presided over the creation of a regular U.S. Navy and the establishment of a series of coastal fortifications.
