RENARD, LOUIS POISSONS, ECREVISSES ET CRABES. Amsterdam; Reinier & Ottens, 1754. A beautifully hand colored copy of what is the second edition, possibly colored on the remaining copper plate etchings of the first edition of 1719. From our research there are only 34 known copies, 5 of which are in North America. Slim folio rebacked within the past 50 years in 3/4 leather preserving the presumed original boards. The title page (with water stain to a small portion upper left) printed in red & black. Present is the preface by Aerout Vosmear. Bound in is a partial English translation in a fine 19th Century hand. The Avertissement de L’Editeur of 2 pages is present as is the 4 page Declaration Sur Cet Ouvrage. Both half titles are present (in black), Tome I is complete with 43 plates. Tome II with 56 of the 57 plates, missing the Mermaid plate. Subject of great controversy in preparation for publication, history has vindicated the illustrators (predominately Samuel Fallours )with great fidelity to shape and color. There are, nonetheless, charming incorporation of human characteristics to some of the crabs, crayfish, lobsters & fish. The arc of the age of enlightenment sought to illuminate all of nature with precision as to shape & color and these illustrations, in great measure, succeeded. The University of Glasgow asserts that this is the earliest known work of fishes illustrated in color. There is occasional textual commentary, including the edibility of some of the specimens. Present as well is the Table Alphabetique Des Noms in four pages. CONDITION: The illustrations are uniformly bold & bright. There is some age toning to the paper, more so in Tom I. This gives no real offense. There is a small stain to the margins of Fol Arabic III. There is a repaired margin to Fol 3 in Tome I. There is a repaired margin to Septieme Planche and a small margin tear to plate XVI (both in Tome II). There is a curious rectangular discoloration following the plate mark to XXXII. Also as noted above. 9-25315 (20,000-40,000)
