EARLY MAPS AND VIEWS WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI. James, Edward. ACCOUNT OF AN EXPEDITION FROM PITTSBURGH TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. Phila: Carey and Lea, 1822. Small folio, atlas volume only. Significant water stains to the prelims and title page. Original boards and label, chips with loss to spine and significant stains to boards front and rear. Both double-page maps without stains or loss, pleasingly time toned, the outlines and borders crisp. Complete with all tissue-guarded plates, minor marginal foxing to the plates with the exception of plate 5 with notable water stains to the margins only. The color plate with two tiny, negligible specks. The two-page vertical sections with minor foxing to lower center margin. James was the expedition surgeon for the 3rd mission of discovery following Lewis & Clark and Pike. Indeed, Pike’s Peak was initially named for James. Howes J-41.
