EARLY ROOKWOOD ART POTTERY COVERED JAR. The mark appears to be late 1880’s, the ground a red terracotta. The bottom also marked “400 R” which indicates the shape number and red clay. The butterfly style handles on a shaped bowl type base with flared shoulder and round top. Fitted with a mushroom shaped cover. REFERENCE: Illustrated opposite page 56 with different glaze and decoration in the Book of Rookwood Pottery by Peck. SIZE: 6” h x 6” at widest. CONDITION: Some glaze crazing, otherwise very good. 9-70166 (500-1,000)
