36” WOOD CARVED BLACK RED CAP. This well-attired gentleman who is ready to serve holds a tray and has room under his arm for a small bottle (not present). In the hollow of his back would have been a clockwork mechanism to make him nod his head from left to right. Perhaps a gentleman to serve you on the dining car, his highly carved and well-detailed face exude friendliness and attentiveness. A woodblock between his feet used to maintain his balance simulate a suitcase. He has an indentation on his right side, presumably to hold a bottle opener or cigar cutter. Perhaps this piece was also an ashtray and the hole under his arm would have held a pipe? Believed to be circa 1930’s-1940’s, of the vintage of whistlers (and is of similar style. CONDITION: Overall very fine, rear wood door formerly containing clockwork mechanism is also missing. JL 1-2877 (500-700)
