EXCEPTIONAL MASSACHUSETTS COLONIAL REVIVAL CARVED MAHOGANY BLOCK FRONT KNEEHOLE SLANT-LID DESK. First half 20th century. The rectangular top with molded edge above the conforming case fitted with a hinged lid profusely carved with central fan flanked by scalloped shelves, the interior with an arrangement of valanced cubbyholes and document drawers. The case with a shell-carved block front top drawer over two stacks of blocked and thumb-molded short drawers centering the kneehole with cupboard door carved with a clamshell over tasseled drapery. All flanked by engaged fluted quarter-columns raised on a conforming gadrooned base and terminating in shell-carved short cabriole legs with ball and talon feet. SIZE: 40″ h. x 38″ w. x 21″ overall d. PROVENANCE: The name “Sack” in penciled script on underside of one drawer would give credence to the possibility that this desk was commissioned by Israel Sack and Co., Boston. CONDITION: In very fine original condition, the finish with good color and patina; a vertical shrinkage crack at midpoint of each side; the writing surface with cigarette burns left side facing.
