EDWARD HENRY BERGE (American, 1876-1924) AMERICAN BRONZE FIGURAL SUNDIAL, “THERE IS NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT”. Circa 1919. Depicting a young boy kneeling before a sundial, kissing a doll held in his hands, a second doll discarded on the dial, on an oval molded plinth cast with the phrase, “There is no time like the present”. Signed on the plinth beside the right foot “E. Berge Sc” above the foundry mark of “B. Zoppo Founders. N.Y.”, stamped on the edge of the plinth. SIZE: 21″ h. x 20″ l. x 13″ d. PROVENANCE: The statue was acquired in the early 1920s by the Rene Evans Paine family in eastern Massachusetts where it was displayed in the family gardens until its removal by the current owner, a family friend. Another example of this sundial was sold in the Chicago galleries of Leslie Hindman in March of 1992. CONDITION: Casting shows very nice verdigris patina; there is an old repair running laterally across the plinth at the knees, visible primarily from the side of the plinth, the underside with visible welded bracket. This fine and rare example of Berge’s work is in very good condition with great surfaces. 9-91369 (20,000-35,000)
