WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH 1871 STOCK TICKER. One of the earliest patented and commercially viable inventions to spring forth from the fertile mind of Thomas A. Edison is this “Universal Ticker” for use by Wall Street. Approximately 6,000 were manufactured and sold between 1873-1900. Those that escaped the WWII scrap drives were ordered to be destroyed by Western Union in the early 1960s. This one bears the serial number 5544 and is marked “D&H Precision Tool Co., Newark, NJ”. Bottom is ink stamped “W.U. Tel Co 42664 Inspected”. The working mechanism is constructed on heavy cast iron base, which is marked “Western Union Telegraph Co.” Gordon Geeko will be green with envy. SIZE: 8” d. CONDITION: Good condition with light surface oxidation to some metal components. Missing top metal spool that held the paper roll. Cast iron base shows light paint chipping but retains the original label and gilt pinstriping. As we are not quite up to speed on electro-magnetic engineering, we’re selling the ticker as shown and cannot guarantee that every nut and bolt is there. 1-4691 PF (5,000-7,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Fall 2005 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
