THEODORE BAUR (1835-1894) THE CHARGING BUFFALO. Second half 19th century. Accompanied by an excerpt from a book which indicates the Meriden Britannia Company commissioned Baur to execute this sculpture especially for the Centennial where it received great acceptance and was later exhibited in many other late 19th Century exhibitions. Signed in script “Theo Baur” under the right rear haunch, with no apparent foundry mark, this realistic rendition depicting a buffalo with lowered head, preparing to charge. SIZE: Buffalo measures 10 1/2″ high, 17 3/4″ in length and the plinth measures 3/4″ high, 15″ in length, width 6 1/2″ CONDITION: With original surfaces and fine gold-brown patina, mounted on an original green marble plinth.
