VERY INTERESTING CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH OF GERONIMO. 8-1/2” x 6-1/2” cabinet card – photographer unknown. This picture was taken inside a tent with cut branches propped in the background. This was likely shot at Ft. Sill, where Geronimo was held captive until his death. There is a pencil inscription on the back – “Chief Geronomo of Choctah Tribe. 4 Soldier Guards attending him to get his picture in Citizen clothes & with the robe made of the human scalps he had captured on the cot by his side. Commanche, Oklahoma Aug. 1899.” While the writer misspelled his name and assigned him to the wrong tribe, this is certainly Geronimo. He is holding an elaborately beaded walking stick, resting it on a very hairy robe of purportedly grisly origin. CONDITION: There is a fingernail-sized loss at the lower right of the photo, and the upper right corner of the card is chipped – otherwise very good. 4-50123 SO15 (1,200-1,500)
