It is an outdoor setting in the Southwest, from the appearance of the vegetation. While the two braves at the left have opted to carry Winchester repeaters, Geronimo and the man closest to him are carrying a Springfield trapdoor rifle and carbine – accurate single-shot rifles with tremendous stopping power.
