RARE 11″ STEIFF BLACK BEAR. We believe this fellow to be of Steiff manufacture from the early 20th century. Very unusual to find a black bear by Steiff, his shoe button eyes are inset with red felt background and his pads are of a gray felt (as opposed to the traditional tan felt normally found on Steiffs). Typical arm and leg configuration with cardboard disc for swiveling, excelsior stuffing, and overall a most appealing look. These black Steiff bears are purported to be referred to as “mourning bears” made shortly after the Titanic tragedy of the early 20th Century in honor of those who perished. Fur is generally in very good condition with most notable loss to left leg and some to face. Brown threading on mouth and nose is largely intact, small section missing on tip of nose. SIZE: 11″ h. CONDITION: Felt on pads is very good overall, left pad shows fair amount of felt loss. Overall very good, lacking ear button. 1-11095 (2,500-4,500)
