SCARCE LUSITANIA MEDAL. Unusual bronze medal, 2-1/8” dia, cast by a German metalworker in August 1915. It depicts the Lusitania with an airplane and a cannon on her decks, sinking with the comment in German, “No Contraband”. The other side shows a skeleton selling tickets to passengers with the Cunard banner beneath the words in German “Business First”, implying that Cunard was knowingly putting civilians at risk. It is accompanied by what appears to be a page torn from a “National Geographic” with pictures of the Lusitania and one of these medals. Also is a copy of the Cunard advertising for the Lusitania. Most unusual of all, however, is the original cardboard box with a color depiction of the Lusitania on the lid. CONDITION: Medal is fine with an even dark patina. The box is damaged, missing 5 of the 8 edges on the top and bottom. The colored lid is reasonably intact with some slight loss of image and the colors somewhat faded. 4-49161 JR273 (200-400)
