UNIQUE SOLID SILVER BALLOONING TROPHY. This great trophy is a lidded cup in the shape of a very early lighter-than-air gas balloon. The basket of the balloon is held aloft by four partially-clad maidens with flowing hair. The basket has six sandbags and a large anchor on its sides. The ropes are made of twisted silver wire and the smaller retraining net ropes and sewn gores are represented by engraved lines on the gas bladder. The base of the trophy is marked with two hallmarks and .900. CONDITION: The wire “rope” loop at the top of the lid is disconnected at one end, but there is no distortion or loss of material, so it is a simple repair. The balloon is slightly out of round and there is a shallow dent on the lip of the base. Otherwise very good. A wonderful trophy from the early days of manned flight. 4-49244 (1,900-2,250)
