LARGE STERLING SILVER TROPHY BOWL PRESENTED TO CLYDE PANGBORN, PILOT OF THE FIRST NON-STOP FLIGHT ACROSS THE PACIFIC. This wonderful trophy is engraved “Presented to Clyde Pangborn by the City of Titusville, Penna. Oct. 28, 1931”. This presentation was made in honor of Pangborn’s recent non-stop flight across the Pacific Ocean. Pangborn and Hugh Heroundon Jr. made the flight in 41hours and 13 minutes crossing from Japan to Wenachee, Washington on October 5th, 1931, after many delays, including a large fine levied by the Japanese government because the duo flew over a military area and took photos without permission. The floriform bowl is 11-5/8” in diameter and about 4” high. It is marked “HAND MADE, JOEL F. HUGHES, STERLING” on the bottom. The base is quite massive, the lip of the foot being over 1/8” in thickness. CONDITION: The inscription is a bit soft from polishing, and there are some scratches here and there but otherwise very good. A very rare opportunity to own a tribute to aviation history. 4-49243 (2,800-3,300)
