VICHY FRENCH AUTOMATON. Portraying woman playing the accordion. Late 19th Century piece featuring a black woman with papier mache head with brown glass inset eyes, open/closed mouth with molded teeth in a reclining position playing a papier mache accordion. When wound and as the music plays, the lady’s right hand moves back and forth to allow the accordion to play. Both of her bare feet which are made out of composition move back and forth, her head moves slightly from side to side as well as up and down. She is most likely wearing her original clothes, which shows wear commensurate with its age. Key is original, although unmarked. SIZE: Overall 21″ t (53cm). Figure itself in reclining position is approx. 18″ (46cm). CONDITION: Everything appears to be original with slight paint flakes on face, minor chips on toes and clothing somewhat dusty with some wear to the silk. Automaton is in relatively good working order but in need of some minor adjustments. 1-10276 (3,500-5,500) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2011 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
