EARLY PRESENTATION WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 PUMP SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. Very early 97 with 28” round bbl, brass bead front sight, solid frame with tiny solid, round, 3-screw forearm and semi-pistol grip stock with smooth steel buttplate. Wood is very highly figured, of crotch cut American walnut, checkered forearm and pistol grip. The left side of the receiver is inscribed “Presented to Captain E.E. Stubbs/By the Winchester Repeating Co./New Haven, Conn.1898”. Capt. Stubbs was a world champion wingshooter and exhibition shooter, who performed with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. It is accompanied by a Winchester letter completely identifying this shotgun with the inscription. It further identifies it as a type “T”. It was shipped May 3, 1898 to order number 8173. SN 51793 CONDITION: About very good. Bbl and magazine tube retain 75-80% original blue turning plum. The receiver retains 75-80% thinning bright original blue. The butt stock has a couple of hairlines at the wrist and the forearm retains a fine hand polished patina with a couple of small nicks and moderate wear on the checkering. The butt stock is oil stained at the wrist with heavy wear on the checkering but otherwise retains about 85% strong bright original varnish with usual handling and use marks and some moderate creases in the finish.
