GAYLE PORTER HOSKINS (American, 1887-1962) ILLUSTRATION OF PIRATES. Oil on canvas scene shows the deck of a ship with a group of people. A man with sword at side holds up a young child who is holding a doll in her left hand. A young woman stands beside. To the right is another man and woman with mammy beside and two pirates, one looking over the rail at another ship which parallels the boat. Signed lower right. Housed in a simple black wood frame. Back of canvas has pencil writing with instructions. Accompanying painting is an exhibition catalog from 1972 from the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts. Hoskins was a member of the Brandywine School and had counseling from Howard Pyle. This is probably an illustration for a book or magazine between the year 1909-1926. SIZE: 15″ x 36″. PROVENANCE: Estate of Jane Stradley, Kembelsville, Pennsylvania and Princess Anne, Maryland. CONDITION: Very good. 9-91657 (1,000-2,000)
