*EA MERKEL DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. CAL. 16ga. (2 3/4″ chambers) High grade box lock shotgun with 29-1/8″ bbls, high matted rib with the makers’ name and suhl on the bbls with the German eagle crest and makers’ cartouche over both chambers. The box lock action is elaborately and very finely engraved with game scenes of a fox on the left side, Auerhaun (German game bird) on the right side, running Raebuck on the floor plate and flying pheasant on the trigger bow. These scenes are all surrounded with fine floral and arabesque pattern engraving. The stock has a toe trap engraved with identical patterns and a scene of a bugling stag, with four holes for rifle cartridges indicating that this may have been a multiple bbl set. The receiver is fitted with side clips, scalloped fences, cocked indicators, a Greener cross bolt and Greener side safety with Sicher inlaid in gold. The stock has plain side panels with black diamonds on each side. The grip is checkered diamond shaped with rounded semi-pistol grip and the stock has a small shadow cheek piece 13-5/8″ over a serrated horn buttplate with splinter forearm. The bbls have double lump with bbl extension and double triggers with the right one being set. SN 8104 CONDITION: Fine. The bbls retain 95-96% strong orig. blue. The receiver is mostly a gray metal color with case colors only in the hidden areas. The wood is sound and retains most of an amateur refinish, missing a couple of chips from the bbl channel on the forearm. Brilliant shiny bores. A fine light little hunting gun. 4-45512 JL332 (900-1,500)
