Unmarked blade with white plastic spiral handle, aluminum fittings with ball finial bearing the swastika on both sides and a spreadwinged eagle hand guard with a swastika in its talons. The sheath is pebble-grained aluminum with an oak leaf decorated tip and oak leaf decorated hanger with attached orig. hanger. Blue and silver straps and fittings with acorn and oak leaf decorations, which bear the German manufacturing and patent marks. There is a silver sword knot attached at the handle. CONDITION: The blade is fine with light drag marks and some very fine surface discoloration that should clean. Sheath is dark with some light oxidation. Hanger is fine and lightly oxidized. The upper band has both sling and stacking swivels with a button head ramrod and no trap in the butt. The cartouche on the left side of the wrist is indecipherable and the breech block is dated 1884. There are remnants of unit markings on right side of buttstock. SN 279469 CONDITION: Good. The bbl retains a dark even plum-brown patina. Receiver, breech block and hammer are a mottled gray-brown color and the lock plate is a thin blue. Wood is sound with myriad small nicks and dings and a few bruises and is dark and oil stained. W.M. WINGERT HEAVY HALF-STOCK PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE. CAL. about 58. Massive heavy target rifle with 35-1/2″ oct. bbl, 1-1/4″ across the flats at the muzzle. The front sight has an iron dovetail with small brass blade and an orig. adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight. The top flat behind the rear sight is marked “WM. WINGERT/DETROIT”. Lock plate is marked “A.W.SPEIS/WARRANTED”. Lock plate, hammer, upper tang and trigger guard are nicely engraved with various patterns. The stock is iron mounted with a pewter nose cap and German silver escutcheons around the wedge. Bottom of the bbl has an iron ramrod rail with two iron guides and an iron nose pipe. The stock is of nicely figured walnut with raised teardrop side panels, a small shield thumb plate and has small cheek pieces on both sides of the butt. The left cheek piece has a German silver bird dog on point and the right side has a spreadwinged American eagle. The buttplate and toe plate are also of iron and lightly engraved. CONDITION: Good to fine. The bbl retains a medium to dark patina. Wood is sound, missing slivers and chips from both sides of the bbl channel, has grain checks in the butt and behind the lock plate. UNMARKED HEAVY PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE. CAL. 45. Simple target rifle with 34″ heavy oct. bbl, 1-1/4″ across the flats at the muzzle with copper blade front sight and adjustable semi-buckhorn orig. rear sight. The bottom the bbl has two iron guides for the hickory ramrod. The stock is straight grain walnut with brass furniture, pewter nose cap and carved bone inlays for sideplates with a modified star on the cheek piece. The right side of the stock has a simple 2-pc patch box. The back action lock is marked “SOWERS & SMITH/WARRANTED” with light engraving of flying ducks. CONDITION: The bbl retains a dark brown heavy patina with wrench marks towards the breech end, moderate to heavy pitting around the nipple area and heavy wood burn out. Our pistol is the “SWITCH HITTER MODEL” complete in it’s orig. box with both 38 & 22 bbls and the very rare orig. stripper clip. CONDITION: Traces of case hardening colors in the flutes of the bbl groups, otherwise smooth gray-brown patina. The grips have minor dents and scratches and have been lightly sanded and oiled. LONDON PISTOL CO. POCKET SIZE PERCUSSION REVOLVER. CAL. 32. 5″ oct. bbl with the makers’ name on the top flat, 5-shot unfluted cylinder with stagecoach hold-up scene and dbl. cylinder-stop notches. Iron frame with side plate and iron grip frame with flared butt and 2-pc walnut grips. The bottom of the frame is marked “PATENTED/DEC.27.1859”. Revolver closely resembles a Manhattan. The frame and back strap are engraved with arabesque patterns. The serial number is marked under the left grip on the front strap and on the bottom of the bbl. SN 129 CONDITION: No original finish remains being a medium gray patina overall with some fine pitting. Grips are fine with traces of original varnish. LOT OF COLT 49 POCKET REVOLVER, HOLSTER AND POWDER HORN. CAL. 31. Colt Model 1849 pocket revolver with 5″ oct. bbl, 2-line New York address, brass grip frame and 1-pc walnut grips. Accompanied by a period black flap holster with button closure and a small flat sided European cows horn powder horn that is 8-1/4″ on the outside edge x 3-1/4″ across the base x 1″ thick. The spout is a carved ducks head with ebony eyes. The sides are beautifully scrimshawed with riders on horseback wearing skirts with long hair and tri-corn hats firing flintlock pistols at each other. The inside edge is scrimshawed “ANNO” and the back edge scrimshawed “MDCCLIIII”. The base plug is dark horn secured with wooden pegs and brass pins. CONDITION: Revolver is about good, no orig. finish remains being a silver-brown patina. Cylinder is mismatched, grips are fine with 25-30% orig. varnish, strong dark bore. Holster is poor with torn belt loop and is dry and crackled. LARGE SET OF EARLY SADDLEBAGS. Brown medium weight leather, measuring about 14″ x 12″ on each side with double strap closures and buckles on the bottom. Each side also has a carrying handle. CONDITION: Fair to good. Dry and crackled, in need of treatment with some loose stitching and missing beading on the bottom of one bag. CIVIL WAR BACKPACK. Made of tarred cotton with a large pouch measuring about 14″ x 13″ and another pouch about 10″ x 13″ with dbl. leather closure straps, leather shoulder harness and brass and iron hooks and buckles. One strap is marked “WM. BUTTE NY” with the date August 13, 1864. CONDITION: Fair with tears on the top and bottom of worn pouch, leather is dry and crackled. 4-45245 (250-350)

CIVIL WAR ERA TEXAS HOPE SADDLE. Great early saddle of the type used by the Confederacy during the Civil War, particularly Texas Cavalry units. Our saddle is unmarked with about a 12″ seat; long front slick fork with large leather covered horn. The upper skirts are short and rounded with four sets of dbl. leather rosettes on each side with pigging strings. The inside skirts are square with old sheepskin lining. It is fitted with 8″ wide leather fenders and wide bent oak stirrups. The cinch band is very early braided horsehide with period leather fittings and iron buckles. CONDITION: Good to very good. The leather is sound and useable but in need of treatment. The seam down the center of the seat is open and the jockeys have been tacked into place. The fenders and stirrups are replacements and the rear skirt seam is laced with a shoelace. The sheepskin lining is good but dry. The pigging strings are replacements. EARLY DROVERS BUFFALO COAT AND GAUNTLETS. Fine early, commercially made buffalo robe drovers coat with rolled collar. It appears to be medium to large size with very dark, curly shoulder hair and sleeves of a more straight hair. The buttons and front closures are pairs of wooden pegs with braided cord loops. The lining is quilted cotton, sewn with red and white thread with soft leather armpit reinforcement. Accompanied by a pair of period buffalo hide hair-on gauntlets of medium to large size, wool lined in the hand and corduroy lined in the cuff. CONDITION: The coat is good with a large area of lost hair on the left front skirt area. The cuffs show light to moderate wear with a small repair on the left side. The gauntlets are much used but intact, with slight loss of hair on the back of the fingers and on the edges of the cuffs. All together a wonderful 18th Century drovers winter outfit. The lost hair section is repairable with a replacement patch of buffalo hide. 4-45183 JL430 (1,500-2,500)

EARLY COLORFUL NAVAJO RUG. Nice early wool Navajo rug 7′-11″ by 3′-9″ of primarily red and blue colors in 3″ bands across the rug with grays-purple mixed and pale green in wavy patterns with white and brown bands at each end. One end is bound off without fringe while the other end has worn braided fringe that was orig. 5″-6″ long. The sides are bound with black natural hair stitching. CONDITION: Fine with the primary colors bright and vivid, while the greens and purples have faded slightly. The tasseled end is worn with some loose stitching. Altogether a fine early Navajo rug to compliment anyone’s den or hunting lodge. 4-45184 JL431 (2,500-4,000)

EXTREMELY LARGE BLACKSMITH MADE BEAR TRAP. Massive trap with dbl. springs, 46″ from tip to tip. The jaws are 16-3/4″ wide, four teeth riveted on one side and three teeth on the other. The pan is flat iron, 7-7/8″ dia. The chain is of extremely heavy links with the swivel on the trap end and a large hand forged 3-tine hook on the other. There is a small piece of very old, very dry wood trapped in the jaws, apparently a piece of the wood used to trip the trap the last time. Accompanied by three short pieces of chain with hand forged wedges on each end and an old hand colored photograph of an old time bear hunter with a huge dead Black bear titled “KILLED BY ART JACKSON-DEAD STREAM SWAMP HOUGHTON LAKE MICH.” The consignor states that Mr. Jackson was the owner of this trap. CONDITION: Fine, having an even dark brown patina over all the metal parts with moderate pitting. 4-45741 JL428 (600-1,200)

GIANT STOREFRONT ADVERTISING POCKET-KNIFE. Wooden bodied, single tin covered blade pocket knife marked on the ricasso “CASE BROS.” with simulated pick bone handles. The bolsters and blade are painted silver, the handles brown. The blade is 39″ long, 86-1/2″ overall in the open position with two screw eyes and a hanger chain. CONDITION: Good to very good. WINCHESTER ORIGINAL SIGNAL CANNON. CAL. 10ga blank. Black finish with rubber tires and nickeled rims, marked on the trail “W.R.A. CO.” with British proofs on the chamber area. SN 525 CONDITION: About very good. The bbl retains a dark coating of oil with mild patina, trail retains about 95% orig. black enamel, rims retain most of their orig. nickel finish. GALBRAITH LINE THROWING CANNON. 2-1/2” bore. 29-3/4” round bbl with trunnions in the middle and a swivel yoke at the rear. The red painted carriage is marked “C.C. GALBRAITH & SON INC. / NEW YORK N.Y. / U.S.A. / 263RH” on the right side. A touch hole is about 4” forward from the breech. WINCHESTER CHROME PLATED SIGNAL CANNON. CAL. 10ga. blank. Late manufactured signal cannon by the Bellmore-Johnson Tool Co. under license from Winchester. Completely chrome plated with solid black composition tires in its orig. wooden Winchester marked shipping crate complete with lid, screws and instruction pamphlet. LARGE IRON EXPRESS BOX. Painted black, 20″ long x 12″ wide x 12″ deep. This box has a flush mounted lid with locking handle, the key to which is inside the case. There is a large ring handle on each end and ring for opening the lid on the top. The outside is painted black and the inside a light gray. The lid has holes through which to insert seal wires. SCRIMSHAWED WHALE TOOTH. Fine early scrimshaw whale tooth, 7″ long x about 2-3/4″ wide with a spectacular scrimshawed 3-masted schooner surrounded by fine vine patterns. The reverse side is inscribed “TAKEN/FROM A DEAD/WHALE/BY L.B.MORSE/1850”. CONDITION: Fine mellow ivory color with three or four age lines at the edge of the root cavity and another near the tip. 4-45902 (300-500)

This lot consists of 14 real carte de visits of Civil War era military personnel, 5 reproductions consisting of Jeff Davis, Lee, McClellan, Lincoln and an officer with his lady, 4 group shots consisting of Naval officers, Statesmen and Generals of the American Civil War, Booth and his associates and “Our Present Peace Commissioners”. A photo of a military encampment and the photo of a statue titled “Biter Bit” which is the image of a Civil War soldier and a bayoneted dog raised over his head. Along with the tintype of a soldier and another of a lady. One of the military photos is of three Union soldiers, two standing and one seated, written in ink on the back “Sergt. Briggs/ Corpl. SMALL WOOD HIDE COVERED TRUNK. Outside dimensions are 16-1/8″ x 8-5/8″ wide x 7-3/4″ high at the domed top. Fine little trunk with rawhide and brass tack decorations with a soft deerskin dust seal and a fine brass latch on the front. The interior is lined with old newspaper, which bears a date of “JANUARY 25, 1849” and appears to be from St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. CONDITION: Considerable loss of hair to the outside and some losses of the dust seal. Otherwise, sound and mostly intact with a few minor bug holes. 4-45905 (50-150)

PRESENTATION TYPE FIREMAN’S AXE. Brass head, 6-3/4″ x 3-1/2″ wide blade, including a 2-1/4″ spike on top. The blade is etched with oak leaf and acorn patterns, a fireman holding a hose with implements about his feet and a ladder behind him. The other side has the same patterns without the fireman. Haft is black ebony colored with screw-on brass butt cap, two brass hanger rings and a blank brass presentation plate on the left side. CONDITION: Excellent. LOT OF 13 POWDER HORNS AND DRINKING HORN. This lot consists of two very large powder horns and eleven smaller powder horns of various sizes and ages and one silver mounted drinking horn with an inscription dated “4 JULY 1873”. One of the medium size horns is scrimmed with the name “ALBERT YOUNG APRIL 17 1880” and has a snake motif and Pennsylvania hex sign. All the horns appear to be fairly early, some with small wooden pegs securing the plugs and others with decorated plugs. CONDITION: Generally very good. EARLY SCRIMSHAW POWDER HORN DATED 1807. This early scrimshaw powder horn engraved “HCNRV + RRWN, SALVACC, RISH HARBOR 1807”. The butt carved in a half-round and sealed with a black, tar-like substance. SIZE: Approximately 16″ on the curve. CONDITION: Structurally good and shows lots of patina. LOT OF TWO LARGE POWDER HORNS. 1) Large cows horn approx. 19″ long with convex wood plug, secured with wooden pegs, faceted spout end with carved letters in each facet and a series of small dots on the body – Fine. Small chip at the big end. 2) Large cows horn approx. 20″ with a nearly flat plug secured with wooden pegs and a turned finial. Measures 50″ x 29″, primary yellow background with two red bands and a prancing lion in red with gold fringe and white canvas staff-end with brass grommets. OLD PAINT DECORATED CANTEEN. Civil War or Indian War pattern round canteen with three metal hangers and 1″ spout, canvas covered. Painted on one side with flowers, vines and leaves and a 2-3/4″ x 2-1/4″ farm scene in the center and the number “142” at the top near the spout. The reverse side is undecorated. CONDITION: Painted side is dark but still vivid and bright colors with good sharp image in the center. Reverse side is intact with smears of paint. 20-8194 JL382 (450-750)

OLD BUFFALO HUNTERS KNIFE POUCH. Hand stitched pouch, 8″ w x 7″ t with side knife sheath containing a very old butcher style knife with oak handles secured with two copper and brass harness rivets. The inside has a double compartment with a brass button closure on the front and has a replacement leather shoulder strap. LEATHER COVERED MAGNIFYING GLASS CASE. Made of fine brown leather with hinged lid and bottom, glass lined with purple velvet interior and a paper label in the lid bearing patent date “Jan 22 1850/SOUTHBURY, CT.” with the handwritten name “ANN F STILES”. CONDITION: Good. The magnifier is missing, leather covering is dry with some crackling and a small damage in the base. Interior is fine. 4-45214 (25-75)

OLD BUFFALO HIDE AND TONGUE SCALE. Of brass and iron construction with a 3-3/4″ oval iron frame having a ring off the top and side and a hide hook off the bottom and tongue hook off the side. The scale graduations are marked on a half-moon shaped brass insert screwed inside the frame. CONDITION: Rusty and heavily pitted. EARLY CANVAS AND LEATHER MAIL POUCH. Standard mail pouch, 19-3/4″ t x 14″ w with leather top and bottom, leather carrying handle and leather closure strap. The five staples for closing the flap are missing. The body of the bag is stenciled “R-C/NO-77”. CONDITION: About good with the aforementioned missing staples. BOOK 1864 NATIONAL GUARD MANUAL. Published in New York by Pinckney, Colonel of the 95th New York National Guard. Small hardback book 7-1/4″ x 4-9/16″ green canvas, 282 pages. CONDITION: Fair to good. BOOK SOLDIERS LETTERS FROM CAMP, BATTLEFIELD AND PRISON. Hardback, published in 1865, contains 472 pages of letters from a variety of soldiers from most of the major battlefields, forts and camps throughout the Civil War. The front cover is decorative with impressed patterns and the back is impressed with different patterns and “SOLDIERS LETTERS”. CONDITION: The binding is fair with detached front cover held in place with black electrical tape which also binds the edges and is probably from another book. BRASS HANDLE BAYONET. 20” Yataghan blade, leather scabbard with brass tip and throat. The blade has a crown over “K” on the left ricasso. The scale pattern has 14 rows of semi-pointed scales and one half row. This is for a rifle with bayonet lug on the side and at first glance appears to be for the Model 1876 Winchester. CONDITION: Light to moderate pitting has been partially cleaned from the blade obscuring the marking, the locking spring has been replaced. Much of the finish has flaked from the leather part of the scabbard but is still solid. 4-44785 X17 (250-500)

The scale pattern has 14 rows of rounded top checkered scales and one half row. This is for a rifle with bayonet lug on the side and at first glance appears to be for the Model 1876 Winchester. CONDITION: Light to moderate pitting has been partially cleaned from the blade but the markings are sharp. Scabbard is broken in two and appears to have been forced onto this blade.
