DELUXE PRESENTATION 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. CAL: 44 WCF (44-40). Second model rifle with 24” oct. barrel, full magazine, case colored receiver, foreend cap and buttplate, single set trigger, 3X or 4X highly figured checkered wood with pistol grip and smooth steel shotgun buttplate. The barrel is fitted with a small-loop Beechs front sight, short semi-buckhorn rear sight with checkered edges and a thick base mid-range tang sight. The left sideplate is factory inscribed “John O. Shares / from / H.W. Munson / Oct. 2. 1889”. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter completely identifying this rifle including the inscription and indicating shipment on February 15, 1882 and that it was returned on November 6, 1889 (reason not indicated). Also accompanied by numerous reproduced pages of military records for a Horace W. Munson regarding his petition for a Civil War pension indicating that he served in the 20th New York Cavalry as a Private from September 1864 to July 1865. SN 80180. CONDITION: Very good, the barrel and magazine tube retain 65-75% orig. blue with some mottled brown patina. The foreend cap retains most of its orig. case colors turning dark with brilliant colors on both sides. The receiver retains about 75% case colors, brilliant in the sheltered areas behind the sideplates with the forward areas turning silver with scattered brown patina mottling. The left sideplate retains 75-80% faded case colors and the right side 25-30% brighter case colors. The lever retains 40-50% case colors, brilliant in sheltered areas, the hammer retains about 90% brilliant colors, the buttplate is mostly a silver brown patina. The wood is sound and retains most of its fine piano finish with some slight shrinkage in the forearm and around the tangs, possibly a factory restored finish. Bright shiny bore. This rifle appears to have had very little use with most of finish loss probably coming from poor storage. 4-44784 JL114 (12,500-25,000)
